An Apology from Jimmy

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004 | Gay Stuff | 5 Comments

So now it looks like our pal Jimmy has decided to apologize:

(09-22) 12:45 PDT BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) —

Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart apologized Wednesday for saying in a televised worship service that he would kill any gay man who looked at him romantically.

I think my favorite part is this though:

On Wednesday, Swaggart said he has jokingly used the expression “killing someone and telling God he died” thousands of times, about all sorts of people. He said the expression is figurative and not meant to harm.

“It’s a humorous statement that doesn’t mean anything. You can’t lie to God — it’s ridiculous,” Swaggart told The Associated Press. “If it’s an insult, I certainly didn’t think it was, but if they are offended, then I certainly offer an apology.”

Somehow thats supposed to make it better. And this from a supposed ‘Man of God’… Hmmm… You decide.

I’m sorry but I don’t even know what to say about this:

Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart Threatens To Kill Gays

(Toronto, Ontario) A Canadian television station has apologized publicly to viewers for a telecast of American evangelist Jimmy Swggart’s television program in which he threatened to kill gays.

the important point being this:

According to a transcript of the program, Swaggart said: “I’m trying to find the correct name for it … this utter absolute, asinine, idiotic stupidity of men marrying men. … I’ve never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I’m gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like that, I’m gonna kill him and tell God he died.”

The remarks were met with applause from his congregation.

What the FUCK… Did the entire building miss the day in Sunday schoool where they talked about the ten commandments and the golden rule?

UPDATE: If you want to actually check it out for yourself check out this link (thanks to The Daily Kos). scrub to 36 minutes 30 seconds to see the quote. I can’t even describe what a kick in the gut it felt like to hear the crowd cheer to a comment like that..

CONGRATULATIONS…

Happy Saturday! 🙂

HRC

Kevin and I went to the HRC dinner tonight in San Francisco and had a fantastic time.. At least I did… Apple sponsored the HRC for the event so there was a table of 10 of us that were there representing the mother-ship and it was a lot of fun.. It was held at Moscone West which was a bit sterile for an event like that (I’ve been in the past at other venues that have been more inviting)… But regardless, as usual, I walked out feeling like I should be doing more to get involved and help out. They do a good job of working toward equal rights toward the GLTB community and did a good job of communicating to the audience the importance of the struggle and how it relates to so many other things.

In particular they did a great job of pointing out how the fight for Marriage equality relates closely to the fight for equality in so many other ways and how, while ‘civil unions’ may seem like a good first step in a lot of ways we shouldn’t be settling because such unions don’t afford any of the same rights by definition as legal civil marriage does.

At any rate… A good time was had by all and I feel like i need to be out there helping… But right now i’m going to crash out and hope i don’t wake up with a hangover in the morning! 🙂

A special place in…

Just read this quote from Sen. Rick Santorum (thanks to bloggy)

“I would argue that the future of our country hangs in the balance because the future of marriage hangs in the balance,” he said shortly before the vote. “Isn’t that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?”

Does he REALLY believe that my desire for basic equal rights is the most important security issue facing them? He and Karl Rove really need to keep their eye on the ball… (I have a few other choice words for those two but I’ll refrain for now since i’m in a good mood).. Gotta agree with barry that there really are more important things to be worrying about.
