So here it is… The finished floors… Actually turned out pretty flippin good… There are some warts that you might expect from a house thats 100 years old. The funniest part is the stripe down the middle of the stairs – the original owners most likely had a runner down the stairs and the wood was badly bleached to the point the floor guys couldn’t sand it out… And if you squint closely at the picture of the hall you can see Kevin’s next project ( the boy just won’t quit! 😉 )

(In case you missed it here is what it looked like before)

By the way

( Does kinda stink in here though.. Cheap high I guess! 😉 )

The Twinkie Defense

Tuesday, September 9th, 2003 | Gay Stuff | 4 Comments

In reading on bloggy about Rev. Phelps’ picketing of the Harvey Milk School in NYC ( I’ll spare you my rant on THAT ) I saw a link to snopes about the Twinky Defense. For those of you not familiar, back in 1978 Dan White (a former SF city supervisor who had recently resigned) broke into city hall and shot then Mayor George Moscone and supervisor Harvey Milk to death. When the case went to trial the defense team was rumored to have used White’s consumption of twinkies as an argument for diminished capacity. When White was ultimately charged with manslaughter instead of first degree murder (purportedly based on this defense) the gay community in San Francisco freaked out and there were riots throughout the city which became known as the White Night Riot.

According to snopes, this wasn’t entirely accurate:

White’s defense was that he had been suffering from a long-standing and untreated depression that diminished his capacity to distinguish right from wrong, and thus he was not capable of the premeditation required to support a charge of first degree murder. Dr. Martin Blinder was called as a witness by the defense to testify that the conversion of the previously health-conscious White to a diet of Twinkies and other junk foods was evidence of his depression.

Very interesting. Regardless of this the city had a right to be outraged but it is always interesting to find that a story that you’ve heard and have been re-telling isn’t entirely accurate..

Anyway – thought I’d share.

Freakin out

Ok.. so, as Matt and Kevin can attest, I spent the day freaking out about our neighbors showing up on the door step with pitch forks after a day of intolerable noise… My solution – flee the scene over to Matt and Brian’s and partaking in a few glasses of wine… Kevin was also nice enough to call our downstairs neighbor and make sure he understood what we were up to (and when it would end)…

But I have to say.. I came home tonight to a freshly sanded and filled floor and DAMN… Looks so nice.. and they’re far from done… Still have to sand off the filler and put the finish on it.. But seeing it look like that makes me feel MUCH better…

woo hoo…

My LORD – I truely am the pack rat from HELL

But this is all gonna look fantastic in the end and all worth it. A working dishwasher and gorgeous hard wood floors..
