iTunes and Addiction

Wednesday, April 30th, 2003 | Geek Stuff | Comments Off on iTunes and Addiction

Ok… So there’s no hiding that i’m a big Apple Fan… Been that way since WAY before I started workin here… But this iTunes / iTunes store is WAY cool… and its DANGEROUS… Two things in particular have prove a way cool time sync…

– Sharing Music via Rendevouz: If you’re on a network (like at work) you can share your music so other people can listen to what you have while you’re connected… No stealing music.. no copying.. just sharing.. Our whole floor at work has made a tacet agreement to share their libraries so now I have a HUGE collection of tunes to get me through the work day..

– Music Shopping: This is REALLY DAMN COOL… iTunes is wired to a store so you can go find the music you want up there, listen to previews, and buy the stuff you want… legally… REALLY DANGEROUS… WAY too easy to get tunes in a way that doesn’t make me feel guilty… 😉

Nuff rah rah stuff.. Just had to share! 🙂 So DAMN COOL…

Just in a cheery mood today I guess! :):)

Momma needs a VACATION

Ughhhh… Been one of those days where I felt like I was hyper productive yet I walked out the door thinking what the hell did I do with my day… I didn’t spend it playing (aside from the occasional web diversion) or chatting. I spent most of it slogging through bug reports and talking to folks about future product plans. Typical day as a software engineer. (parents – if your kids ever speak of doing this for a living tell them to be a fireman or an astronaut like every other kid on the block)…

Anyway … 6 pm rolled around and I had to head home cuz of my commute from HELL (45 minutes each direction – every day… living in SF rocks… working for apple Rocks.. why the hell Apple isn’t in San Francisco escapes me)… Felt like I should keep going but just didn’t have the energy.

Went to dinner with Kevin at Fuzio… Kind of our regular. they have good cocktails and the caramelized onion fuccia (sp?) is da bomb. On the way there there was a HUGE line at Ben and Jerry’s cuz, as it turns out, it was free scoop night there.. who’da thunk it… On the way home some random homeless freak in the ‘stro called Kevin something strange – Kevin didn’t know who it was so it didn’t need to matter but it kinda bummed him out regardless..

Now, at 9:30 at night, i’m FINALLY decompressing… Reading pickle juice, Madame Fabulous, and of course Matt and Ray’s

Bis morgen… 😉

David Sedaris

Ok… So we went to see David Sedaris last night at the SF War Memorial Opera House… That dude is FUCKING FUNNY… I’ve never been too a reading before – and definitely not one that could fill up the opera house – so I’m not sure what I was expecting… But damn.. He had me rolling nearly the whole time…

What I can’t figure out is how much of what he writes actually comes from reality and how much of it is embellished … and I suppose it doesn’t matter… But he told stories about strip poker at slumber parties when he was a kid, his parents strange sleeping patterns, and their beach house as a kid..

What was nearly as funny was watching the two couples in front of us during the show.. It was two straight couples in their 50s or 60s.. We saw them at dinner before and ASSUMED they were going to the symphony or something.. but no – they were directly in front of us for the show.. and they were laughing harder than I was for most of it.. The only thing that didn’t seem to amuse them was when he took questions and was talking about his sister-in-law, who just had a baby, in a rather graphic way.. (actually – the guys were still rolling – but their wives didn’t seem amused)…

anyway – was really fun.. glad matt got us the tickets…

Dabbling with Creativity

So, in case you haven’t noticed, I think i’ve finally figured out how to futz with styles and templates in MT – and now I’ve run amok… Still trying to come up with something that suits me and seems somewhat classy.. Don’t know if this is it but I figured I’d give it a try and see what y’all think…

Just so you know – I didn’t pick the color scheme entirely… Since my better half does design for a living I figured I’d point him at picking colors and stuff (since he never stops reminding me that I shouldn’t be trusted with such things)… So I told him I wanted to use that stained glass window in our skylight as a theme and he picked colors that fit well with that…

So thats the general idea… I”m not ENTIRELY sold on the colors yet – it seems a little much to me… but its better than what I would have come up with and kevin says its ‘sophisticated’…

So… what y’all think? Be honest… (don’t worry – he doesn’t read this! ;))

Weekly Wrap-up #52 – Jobs

Sunday, April 27th, 2003 | Blog Stuff | Comments Off on Weekly Wrap-up #52 – Jobs

1. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Hmmm… I switched what I wanted to be ALL the time – it depended on what book my parents gave me to read at the time… I remember wanting to be an archeologist at one point because of a national geographic book I had on ancient egypt I had (LOVED the hieroglyphics and the cool costumes). I also wanted to be a teacher… used to play school ALL THE time with my brothers and sisters… Even got teachers to give me the ‘teachers editions’ to old books and left over dittos they didn’t use..

2. When did you get your first job? What was it?
I wasn’t allowed to get a job until my senior year in high school. My mom didn’t want me having work conflict with my school work. When I finally got one it was as a cashier at Knowlwoods restaurant in Irvine… Really hated it – hard work for not much money but it gave me mad money. Once I got into college I worked in random computer related jobs and by my senior year I was workin 3 jobs and goin to school – mostly cuz I enjoyed the work more than I enjoyed the classes I was takin..

3. What is your job now? Do you like it? Why or why not?
Now I’m a software engineer working on Final Cut Pro at Apple Computer. I actually love it now although its kickin my ass right now… REALLY Smart group of people and its kinda fun working on a product that people use for real life stuff – especially when you see the name of your product go by in the credits of a movie! :)…

4. What would be the worst job for you to have? Why?
Customer service of any kind (see my first job). Provided people are respectful I really enjoy interacting with people and customers. I have a ball working at trade shows answering questions for people. But customer service is a fucked up offshoot of that where customers seem to think that, because they bought a product, they’ve earned the right to treat people like dirt and I don’t have much patience for that.. Putting me on the other end of a phone or service counter from those kind of people would be a bad idea – Long as people are respectful I’m sure I’d be perfectly helpful – but I think i’d probably come out of my face at ’em if they started bein snots… 😉

5. What would be your ideal job if you could chose it? Why?
Hmmm… I’m thinkin the ideal job for me would be high tech training or teaching of some form though I haven’t quite found how that would work out just yet… But it seems that would be a great combination of all the things I love.. I LOVE to travel… I REALLY enjoy helpign people learn… And i’m a geek at heart… so it seems like a fun fit… Just haven’t found the right place to do that yet…
