Weekly Wrapup #75 – Saving Your Life

Sunday, October 19th, 2003 | Blog Exercises

  1. Describe how much you agree or disagree with the idea that journals and blogs are a way to “save” your life?
I think it depends very much on the blog. I’ve read some blogs that are VERY much that – opportunities to chronicle someone’s life… Others are opportunites to provide others with information and less personal.. And some are a little of both. I think the thing that journals have over blogs is journals are much more private and I’d be much more inclined to document EVERYTHING of importance in my life if others weren’t reading it. As it stands I censor myself because I know the people I might write about could possibly read it.

  1. How often you you reference other blog entries you’ve written? How often do you link to those blog entries as documentation of your history? How often do you ping (if your blogging software has that capability) your own entries?
I do that fairly frequently – as I find something of interest or something that I want to respond to I link to it. It serves as a running trail of thought as well as a way for me to squirrel away things that interest me..
  2. How many entries does your blog have? What are the top two topics you most frequently write about? The bottom two?
According to MT I have 258 entries in 10 different categories. Probably the thing I’ve written about the most often tends to be politics because thats the kind of stuff that gets me amped up and its the forum where I want feedback and discussion from other people. The second most common is probably activities that I’ve done in my free time…
The bottom two are probably relationship issues and friendship drama. Both because these are personal subjects and I don’t want people to read about what I’m thinking from my blog – I’d rather they hear it from my mouth
  3. Have you ever rebooted your blog to erase your previous online life? If so, why? If not, under what circumstances would you ever consider it?
Nope.. Largely because I just started doing it this year so i’m still growing it… I would consider it down the road and have considered it in the past – largely to give it focus and seperate the ‘saving your life’ part of the blog from the ‘talking with other people stuff’… Right now I feel like its just a hodge podge of ‘stuff’ without a lot of focus… thats what makes it fun for me now though! 🙂
  4. Share a blog that you best feels “saves” someone’s life? Why did you pick it?
There are a couple I can think of… Pickle Juice is an obvious choice because of the open and no B.S. way she seems to talk about everything in her life.. The other one that pops to mind is a the blog of someone who was dealing with the gradual death of her mother. I can’t find that one any more but it really touched me..

Now would probably not be the best time to tell you that Andy and I are the same person – a lonely, fat, elderly man living on a secluded ranch in Texas.

It’s all lies. Lies, I tells ya!

(This mention made me go all “awww!” and made me want to pet a kitty. I *never* go “awww” and pet kitties, so you should feel special.)
